Department Information
District Resources

We are without doubt the smallest school district in Nevada and yet we are blessed with over 3,570 square miles of mountainous high-desert landscape. With only eighty elementary students in three locations, we offer a personal touch to education unmatched in the lower “forty-eight” states. Even though we live in a remote area, few schools in the Nation can equal Esmeralda’s use of classroom technology.

Take a moment to travel through our website and get a flavor of what we have to offer our young people. Esmeralda County School District truly is “Where Education Meets the Frontier”.

November 2016 Superintendent's Update

by Rodriguez Broadnax on 11/14/16

Good Evening Team,

I hope your week is off to a great start. This email is sent as a short update from the Office of the Superintendent.

I would like to thank those of you who attended our second Teacher/Staff Retreat held this past weekend in Carson City. I would also like to thank all of our teachers whom presented great instructional strategies and ideas to the staff. You did a great job and I am very proud to be part of this team. Keep up the great work! I thank you for your attention, collaboration and participation with our guest speakers. They really enjoyed you.

As a reminder, I will be out of the office for the next couple of days and return for most of the day on Wednesday. We will be having the Cabinet Meeting Wednesday afternoon in Dyer. If there is an item you would like placed on the agenda and discussed by the Administrative Cabinet, please email me by 12 Noon Tuesday, November 15, 2016, as I will be working on the agenda thereafter. After the Cabinet Meeting, I will be departing with the School Board to Reno to attend the Nevada Association of School Board Conference the reminder of the week. As usual, Mr. Scates will be in charge of the district. If there is something that comes up, please see or call him and he will notify me.

The November School Board Meeting time, date and location has changed. The prior date was November 8, 2016 at 6PM in Dyer; however, the meeting will be held in Goldfield at the Annex Building on November 22, 2016 @ 3PM due to the District’s Thanksgiving Luncheon being held in the Goldfield Gymnasium at 12:10PM.

Finally, it is with a heavy heart and sadness that I announce the passing of our District Secretary Melinda Melendrez’s father, Mr. Rich. He was a great man and a huge advocate for our school district. He will truly be missed but never forgotten. Please keep Melinda, her mother Joan, Paul and the rest of the family in your thoughts and prayers. Once funeral arrangements are made, I will announce them to the staff.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact my office.

As always, thank you for all you do!

Have a safe and restful evening!

All the Best,

2016 - 2017 Professional Development Week

by Rodriguez Broadnax on 07/26/16

TO: All Employees
 FROM: Rodriguez F. Broadnax, Ed.S.
 Superintendent Esmeralda County School District
DATE: July 26, 2016

I hope each of you have had a great summer. I believe this was the quickest summer so far in my career. Our Staff Development and In-Service format for the beginning of the 2016 – 2017 school year will be similar to what we have done in the past. Our Professional Development week will begin on Monday, August 8th at 8AM in Dyer in Classroom II in the new modular. This day is mandatory for the entire staff as it will be our orientation day.

All employees are required to attend the in-service meeting on Monday, August 8th from 8:30AM – 4PM at Dyer Elementary School. This includes Administrators, Teachers, Classified Staff, and Bus Drivers.

Certified staff will attend all sessions and paraprofessionals are encouraged to attend the collaborative professional development sessions scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, August 11th, Teachers will return to their buildings to work with the Curriculum Coordinator, Rob Valentine and Mr. Scates on Professional Development for the newly adopted curriculum via Skype. The agenda for this day will be included in your package which you will receive on August 8th. This will also allow teachers to work in their rooms. Paraprofessionals are also encouraged to work with teachers Thursday and Friday to prepare for the opening of school.

Finally, locations for Professional Development will vary Monday thru Wednesday. On Monday and Tuesday, Dyer Elementary will be the host site. Again, the meetings will be held in room II of the new modular. Goldfield will host the meeting, Wednesday, August 10th in Mr. Jury’s room which is room 4. Please note, paraprofessionals are not permitted to drive district vehicles to in-services. A certified employee must drive and paraprofessionals must car pool from Dyer to Goldfield or Goldfield to Dyer.

I look forward to seeing you at Staff Development. Let’s have a Stellar Year!!!!

2016 -2017 Esmeralda CSD Welcome Back

by Rodriguez Broadnax on 07/19/16

July 19, 2016

Dear ECSD Family,

Wow, I can’t believe we are already over halfway through summer vacation. I would like to officially welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year.  I hope you are having a great summer and spending some quality time with your family and friends. It is my sincere hope that your children will be spending some time reading throughout the summer. This letter is sent as a detailed notification of updates of things happening within the Esmeralda County School District.

The opening day of school is set for Monday, August 15, 2016 with a start time of 8:00AM at all building sites (Goldfield, Dyer, and Silver Peak). The district is looking forward to another amazing and successful school year.

Some of the amazing things going on in ECSD are as follows:

·         We are currently remodeling schools as we are placing new carpeting, flooring, and roofing at our building sites. We expect our schools to be safe, healthy, nurturing, and exciting learning environments. We thank our ECSD Board of Education for approving the Capital Projects which will essentially help to ensure a high level of continued student achievement.

·         Next, we have developed a new School Board Meeting Annex, which is located on 95 at the old Yucca Mountain Building in Goldfield, Nevada. Our first school board meeting of the 2016 – 2017 school year will be held in the new facility Tuesday, August 09, 2016 at 6PM.

·         Due to overcrowding at our Dyer Campus, we were donated a new modular unit from the Nye County School District without charge, other than moving it to our location. The building will house our Pre-K Program and our District Counselor and Director of Special Education.

·         We have also developed a new Parent Education Center at the Goldfield Campus which would host a new initiative “Coffee with the Superintendent” once a month which would allow parents to ask questions and become briefed and updated on district events in an open public forum. (Dates are forthcoming)

·         Our Goldfield Campus will have two new teachers this year.  The breakdown for grade levels at Goldfield are as follows: Grades K-2 – Ms. Lori Daine; Grades 3-4 – Mr. Milo Jury moving from Salt Lake City, Utah; and Grades 5-8 will be taught by Mr. James Dilworth moving from Albuquerque, New Mexico. We welcome them to Esmeralda County.

·         Finally, as a mandate by the Nevada Department of Education the district has moved from our Power School System to Infinite Campus. There is a link on the district website that will take you to the System. There is a link to download Infinite Campus on your mobile device. One user friendly character about this program is this system allows parents to register their students online instead of coming directly into the office.

As always, we thank you for your vested interest and support in our students’ education. I look forward to a very successful and rewarding 2016 – 2017 school year. Please use the Superintendent’s Blog on the district’s website to comment and stay connected to all of the news and updates within ECSD.  I have an “Open Door” policy so feel free to call, email, or even come by to see me if you have any questions or concerns.
